Why We Chose Temecula Coffee Roasters as Our Roasting Partner
We didn't choose the closest or the cheapest roaster. We chose the one whose values matched ours. Here's what that decision looked like.

Quick answer: We chose Temecula Coffee Roasters because they roast to order, operate an FDA-registered specialty facility, and share our values: freshness over warehouse inventory, honest sourcing, and family-owned craftsmanship.
When we decided to start Saltbox Coffee Co., one decision shaped everything that followed: who roasts the coffee.
We're a small brand. We don't roast. We don't warehouse. We're curators: we select which coffees to offer, we build the brand around a community we understand, and we handle the customer relationship. The actual craft of getting a green bean from a farm in Ethiopia or Colombia to a fresh, roasted bag on your doorstep. That's Temecula Coffee Roasters.
Here's why we chose them.
What We Were Looking For
Before we found TCR, we had a list of what mattered. Not wants. Requirements:
1. Specialty-grade coffee only. We didn't want to sell commodity coffee with a pretty label. Specialty grade (80+ points on the SCA scale) means quality is independently verified, not just claimed.
2. Real sourcing transparency. We needed a roaster who could tell us not just where the coffee came from, but how the farmers were treated and what practices were in place. Vague claims about "sourcing responsibly" weren't going to work for a brand built around people who care about provenance.
3. Roasted fresh, not from inventory. The freshness claim is real: coffee roasted last week is objectively better than coffee roasted last month. We needed a roaster who would roast to order, not ship from a warehouse.
4. A drop-ship program that actually works. We're not interested in managing inventory. The fulfillment model had to be reliable, automated, and trustworthy.
What We Found in TCR
Temecula Coffee Roasters checks every box, and a few we didn't know to ask about.
Specialty-Grade Throughout
Every coffee in their catalog goes through cupping, a formal blind taste evaluation used by the specialty coffee industry. Beans that don't score at the specialty level don't make it to market. The result is a catalog of 46+ coffees we can confidently stand behind.
Genuine Sourcing Commitments
TCR sources specialty-grade coffee through relationships they can explain. Origin, processing, and how farmers are compensated. We chose them for transparency and roast-to-order freshness, not for a checklist of third-party marks on our website. Saltbox does not display certification logos unless we are enrolled in those programs and the specific product qualifies.
Roasted to Order
This is the part that matters most for freshness. When you place an order on Saltbox Coffee Co., it routes through Shopify to TCR's fulfillment system. They roast your specific coffee within 1–2 business days of your order. Then they label it, pack it, and ship it.
There's no warehouse. No aging on a shelf. The bag you receive was a green bean a few days before it arrived at your door. That's the tagline we chose: "Coffee the way it was meant to be. FRESH." And it's genuinely true in our case.
An FDA-Registered, FSMA-Compliant Facility
If you're raising food, you understand food safety. TCR is an FDA-registered roaster operating in full compliance with the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). For a brand built on trust and transparency, that certification matters.
The Private Label Relationship
We should be clear about what this relationship looks like, because honesty is central to who we are.
Saltbox Coffee Co. is a private label brand built on TCR's infrastructure. We chose which coffees to offer from their catalog. We designed the Saltbox branding and label. TCR prints our label and ships in our name.
What this means for you: every bag of Saltbox Coffee carries our brand, but the coffee inside was grown by farmers TCR has long-term sourcing relationships with, cupped by TCR's team, roasted in TCR's facility. The quality guarantee is theirs, and it's a genuine one.
We think this model is the right one for a small brand with big standards. We couldn't source, roast, and fulfill at the quality level TCR provides without their infrastructure. And we didn't have to. We found the right partner instead.
If you want to know more about TCR directly, their website is temeculacoffeeroasters.com. We encourage transparency, even when it points outside our own domain. Read our about page or shop fresh-roasted coffee.
