Why Saltbox Gives Back to Farmer Veterans
Saltbox is veteran-owned. We pledge 1% of revenue, 1% of product, and 1% of our time to the Farmer Veteran Coalition, here's why that partnership matters.

Quick answer: Saltbox Coffee Co. is a veteran-owned business. We pledge 1% of gross revenue, 1% of product, and 1% of our time to the Farmer Veteran Coalition because the path from military service into agriculture is hard, and because rural work, honest craft, and second careers on the land are values we share with the customers we serve.
When we started Saltbox, we knew the coffee had to stand on its own: fresh roasted, honestly sourced, shipped without warehouse games. We also knew we wanted the business to point somewhere beyond the margin. Not guilt-based marketing. Just a clear answer to the question: if someone buys a bag from us, what else does that support?
Saltbox Gives Back is that answer.
Who the Farmer Veteran Coalition Serves
The Farmer Veteran Coalition (FVC) helps veterans build meaningful careers in agriculture. That includes training, mentorship, networking, and direct support through programs like the Farmer Veteran Fellowship Fund. Grants that help beginning veteran farmers acquire equipment, improve infrastructure, and stay on the land.
The transition from military service to farming is not automatic. Veterans bring discipline, logistics skills, and comfort with hard work, but land access, capital, and rural business networks are real barriers. FVC exists to lower those barriers.
We are not affiliated with FVC beyond our pledge as a donor and volunteer. We point to their work because we believe in it, not because we speak for them.
What the 1/1/1 Pledge Means
Inspired by the Pledge 1% movement, Saltbox commits three things:
1% of revenue: One percent of gross sales goes to FVC. Not profit after expenses. Revenue. That keeps the commitment transparent: every bag sold includes a small, fixed contribution to veteran farmers.
1% of product: Coffee donated for FVC events, fundraisers, and community gatherings where a good cup supports a good cause.
1% of time: Volunteer hours toward FVC-aligned work. Mentorship, event support, and rural community projects as capacity allows.

How This Connects to Your Cup
Buying Saltbox coffee does not replace FVC's grants or the hard work veteran farmers put in every day. It adds a thin, steady layer of support on top of a product we already stand behind.
We do not ask you to choose us only because of philanthropy. Choose us if the coffee fits your morning, if you want fresh roast, compostable 12oz packaging, and honest homestead values. The give-back piece is something we want you to know about, not something we want you to feel bad about.
What We Do Not Claim
Saltbox is a small private-label coffee company, not a nonprofit. We do not certify farms, audit supply chains on behalf of third-party programs, or display certification marks we have not earned. For the difference between philanthropy and certification labels, see our educational post on Fairtrade coffee explained.
Coffee quality and give-back commitments are separate promises. We try to keep both.
FAQ
Is Saltbox a nonprofit?
No. Saltbox Coffee Co. is a veteran-owned small business. We donate a portion of revenue to FVC as part of our operating commitment.
How do I learn more about FVC?
Visit farmvetco.org. If you are a veteran interested in agriculture, their resources are the right starting point, not us.
Can I donate to FVC directly?
Yes. Direct donations to FVC are always welcome. Our pledge is in addition to whatever you choose to support on your own.
Does buying coffee fund FarmSittersConnect or other projects?
Saltbox Gives Back is specifically pledged to FVC. Other projects we work on (like FarmSittersConnect) are separate efforts.
Why agriculture for veterans?
Rural work rewards patience, physical effort, and stewardship. Skills many veterans already have. Farming and homesteading can be a purposeful second chapter. FVC makes that chapter more reachable.
